I will be ‘live-on-air’ on Friday 17 March from Oxford-based web station Matchbox Radio 24’s HQ talking about my last album, Physiognomy of the Soul (now re-released in the UK and the US) and my new album – due for release this year.
Visit www.matchboxrecordings.co.uk. The Matchbox operation is owned and managed by an old musician friend of mine, Dale Olivier, who has been based in the UK for over 10 years now. Part of the Live 365 international web network, Matchbox Radio gives me the platform to link into some 8000 web stations across the globe. The company’s recording and distribution arm will also be responsible for my forthcoming releases – so listen out for the first single around the end of April…. and a series of ads plugging the new stuff.

Check out and add yourself as a friend on my other site at www.myspace.com/bbmusicuk

The myspace concept is quite a phenomenon when you realise there’s close on 60 million people currently subscribed. Since all the press around The Arctic Monkeys’ success in building a fan-base on the site - apparently long before there was any record company interest - bands are flocking to the site and there is an amazing assortment of stuff…. and some really killer musos around. It’s common knowledge among the music fraternity that the really talented musicians are sitting around in out-of-way towns and villages with scant chance of ever getting discovered - which I totally agree with especially with so much drivel on the radio at the moment, most notably those dreadful remixes of ‘70s disco tunes.

I’ve spent the last couple of weeks finalising songs for my new album. It’s been a somewhat trying period getting back into a composing mindset after such a protracted break… but all-in-all a great experience, especially when a song comes together.

That’s the thing I love so much about songwriting; you can sit for days trying a billion different chord permutations and achieve sweet zip, and then out of the blue you churn out a handful of cool songs… in a couple of minutes.

I’m recording at Riverside Studios in Bath and I’m currently laying down basic song structures and drum patterns on the Mac. I’m looking to track about 15 songs of which 10 or 11 will hopefully be good enough for the final recording sessions which will last about five weeks, and then a week or two for final mixing and mastering.

Looking forward to working with local session musicians as well. Some of these guys are extremely seasoned (and well-known) players and bring with them years of studio and live experience. That’s one thing I discovered early on in my recording career: don’t sit around for days trying to play everything yourself when a good session muso can hit it in a few hours. This cuts down on studio costs immensely – and invariably sounds a lot better!

Riverside Studios has quite a reputation, having hosted a number of well-known artists over the years. Recent clients include Robert Plant who did a lot of his highly-acclaimed 'Mighty Re-arranger' album there and also Goldfrapp with their massive hit album, 'Supernature'. So I think I’ve made a good choice – and let’s hope for a hit album as well.

Pete Delahaye, a friend from SA and a great keyboardist & programmer, lives nearby in the Berkshire town of Newbury and is making great waves with his electronica outfit, Hypnotrip. He’s getting quite a reputation as an innovative composer and he has quite a unique way of going about composing and promoting his music. You can check out his stuff at http://www.myspace.com/hypnode
